Just got my CDI from a ebay dealer in Hungary today, took only a few days, the price was ok – so i’m very happy! Couldn’t find the CDI anywhere else, so this could have been a major problem!
No misfires anymore, the bike runs great!
I’ve always wanted an offroader, i like the simple and light DT models from Yamaha. When i saw this bike for a good price i bought it. This version is liquid cooled and has a powervalve system in the exhaust port (YVPS), which alters the exhaust port height to a lower level at slower engine speeds. This gives the bike a wide powerband combined with the typical two stroke peak power.
The engine produces 22 HP which isn’t much, but ok for the light weight of 100 kg. Feels like riding a tuned moped 😉
The bike is in good mechanical condition, with only a little ignition problem that i’m fixing at the moment. Brakes, liquids, chain and sprockets haven’t done many km’s. The cosmetics aren’t too good, but who cares when the bike is covered in dirt most of the time.
I will upload pictures in the gallery below, make sure to check the descriptions on some of the pictures:
Tonight i got the Puch VZ engine finished. It took a while before i got the right light coils for the ignition. The new crankshaft also gave me some problems, the tapered end for the flywheel was a few millimeters misplaced. So the cooling fins hit the ignition cover, i had to do some annoying grinding.
More pictures are in the previous post:
Yesterday i got some new parts so i could get this engine assembled. The gasket was a little thick, and the crankshaft a little narrower, so it took alot of shims to align it and get the end play right.

Just to make sure that i don’t get bored, i promised to help “JPS” with his Puch VZ engine. JPS is a very active member of the danish forum billig-scooter.dk.
The engine had knocking noises and leaked oil, so i’m going to change all bearings and seals. The crankshaft is also worn, so it will be changed to a new one.
There isn’t anything other wrong with the engine, all mechanical parts look good as new.
This gallery will contain all the images i take while doing the repair, remember to look for photo comments:
A short video of the noises, it was worse and visible in real life:
My brother Stefan and I did a little engine work this weekend, until a missing flywheel puller stopped our progress. But we managed to get a first look at the internals, and so far it’s not looking too good.
First problem was the cylinder barrel, a “specialist” has tuned it in the past. The ports and piston skirts are all messed up, sadly. The cylinder head doesn’t look too good either, it shows signs of detonation or alot of driving with a way too lean mixture.
The secondary gear shaft is messed up where the chain sprocket is attached, i’m not sure if we can fix it. Maybe we need a new one, which is hard to find.
